The Old Tel Aviv (Trumpeldor) Cemetery in TEL AVIV, ISRAEL

The first Jewish cemetery in Tel Aviv was in Jaffa. In 1902, there was a cholera epidemic in Jaffa and the governor forbade burial close to the city walls. The authorities gave Shimon Rokach, one of the leaders of the Jewish community, land far to the northeast of Jaffa at a cost of 1,000 French francs. He then gave the land to the community for use as a cemetery. The first cholera victim was buried in Jaffa, and the second was buried in the 'new' cemetery.

The term "Mass Grave" refers to the communal graves of victims of the Arab riots of 1921, 1929 and 1936-39. The Chevra Kadisha has posted photos of the people buried in the Mass Grave but the dates are not correct. A loose translation of the Mass Grave inscription is as follows:

The holy and pure
Of the residents of Tel Aviv and the surrounding areas
Who fell in the uprisings of 5796-5798 [1936-1938]
For “Kiddush Hashem” and defense of the land
May G-d redeem their blood
Most of the information for this cemetery was taken from a book (in Hebrew) entitled "The Old Cemetery, Tel-Aviv" by Kroll and Linman, available in most Israeli university libraries. The cemetery is also known as "Trumpeldor" because it is located on Trumpeldor Street in Tel Aviv.

Transliterating some of the names and the towns from which the people came was often extremely difficult. We apologize for any misspellings and hope that if anyone can correct us, they will contact us.

The volunteers for this project were: Gilda Kurtzman, Sharon Lehrer, Israel Pickholtz, Micha Reisel and Esther Snyder, all of Israel.
