The Hungarian town of Kõszeg which is only a few miles from the Austrian border, once had an active Jewish community. The only post war evidence of that community's former existence however is the now abandoned Synagogue and small out of town cemetery, which also appears to be no longer in use.

The cemetery is walled and access is through an insignificant doorway which lacks any grandeur. The key to the door can be obtained from the office in the town cemetery nearby, but their office is closed at weekends. Once inside, it becomes obvious that when from viewed from the air. the canopy of those trees that grow within, conceal any evidence of a cemetery at that location. The area is kept in reasonably good order and there appear to be about 150 Jewish headstones, most of which are still standing. About half of them still contain readable Hungarian or Hebrew texts. Our photographic record of them is unfortunately incomplete, for when we returned to make a record of the more tightly clustered smaller headstones at the rear, we also overlooked the fact that the office was closed at weekends and we were therefore unable to get the key complete the task.
