Iaşi Jewish Cemetery in IAŞI, ROMANIA

IAŞI CEMETERY DESCRIPTION

By Reuven Singer

The cemetery is very overgrown and poorly maintained. Dogs run freely through it. There is a cemetery office but I am not sure if there is a phone there. The caretaker is non-Jewish and minimally helpful - often not familiar with location of plots.

The burial records include records from the following sources:

Notes on Dates: Generally speaking, the dates in the Hebrew database (1883-1917) seem to be the dates of burial whereas the dates in the later Romanian databases seem to be the dates of death. While preparing the data, it is clear that there are a number of inconsistencies, so this information may not be correctly identified. Sometimes two dates are given for an entry separated by a slash eg. 13/15-Aug-1895. It is probable that the first date is the date of death and the second the date of burial. The slashes are apparently used inconsistently when a greater than normal interval elapsed between death and burial. These records are translated from the original Hebrew and Yiddish. There are multiple ways of spelling such names in the Latin alphabet, so the spellings given here reflect assumptions of the translators and may not be the exact way that the name would have been spelled by the individual in question. Dates before 1919 are based on the Julian calendar and dates after are based on the Gregorian calendar. Some dates in 1919 are given in both formats.

Acknowledgments: Reuven Singer organized and coordinated the project. Data entry was performed by the following volunteers: Aharon David, Edna Loebel, Israel Rabin, Oded Mann, Rony Shaham and Yocheved Klausner. Monica Talmor provided Romanian translation assistance.
