GREENBERG
Description In 1904, my great grandfather Joseph Ballon entered the U.S. from Orgerve Russia. He came to a cousin, R. Greenberg, living at 114 Varet St. in Brooklyn NY. before settling in Pittsburgh. The ONLY OTHER information I have about the Greenberg family is that there was a son, Harry.
Family lore has it that when the Greenbergs came to New York, they changed their name from Ballin/Balun/Ballin to Greenberg because they thought Ballin/Balun/Ballin sounded too Jewish. It is possible that I'm looking for a Greenburg family.
Since I don't know which side of the family the Greenbergs are related,I should add that my great grandmother Lena(Elizabeth) Bass was born in Kalome Russia.

GRUBIN
Description London based family, originally Grubin but now Reuben, researching family history originally from Dvisnk in Latvia. From no names we now have over 100!

The Story

The Research into the Reuben/Grubin Family is currently being undertaken by Lawrence Reuben and myself, his son, James Reuben.

Armed with just a few names and the town of Dvinsk, Latvia, at first we hit the Jewishgen.org website, which at first resulted in no matches.

Through Jewishgen we found the name and email address of the Latvian State Archives. I supplied the names that we had and my contact there, Rita. Alas no joy at her end either.

A breakthrough though was made when Lawrence obtained via a Great Aunt a passport dating back to the late 1800’s/early 1900’s that apparently the whole family came over even though it was only one person’s. A female.
This passport can be seen on the site

I forwarded this on to Rita in Latvia who translated part of it.

It was clear on the passport that the family name was not originally Reuben, but GRUBIN. Bingo, Lawrence found a match, Surname and First Name on the Jewishgen All Latvia Database. We forwarded this on to Rita and it now turns out that she has found the family and is currently creating a family genealogy of the family with over 40 members dating back to the early 1800’s.

This has now been completed and can be viewed on the website
