Russian Naming enquiry: Brothers Itsko and Izik; KOMINKERER Hersh /Hershko Hertzkovich 3 #names #belarus
I have received some records from The Together Plan regrading my research of the KAMINSKY / KOMENKIER family, from Shereshevo, Pruzhany, Grodno (then Russia, today Sarasova, Belarus) 2 early records, Alphabetical lists of Jews of the Pruzhany Jewish Community, 1853 and 1859 listed 3 brothers: Hershko, Itsko and Izik. This record also appears in JewishGen Belarus database. As much as I know both Itsko and Izik names derive from Yitzhak, and I wonder what could be the explanation of this naming of the 2 brothers, who were both alive in 1853. Unless in Russian they are different names? Later on, in 1910 and 1913 Voters Lists and 1912 taxpayer list, appears the names Kominkerer Hershko / Hersh Hertskovich and Kominkerer Shlioma Hertzkovich. As much as I know, “ovich” means “son of”; So what can explain “Hershko Hertzkovich”? Hertzkovich here is not a patronymic surname, and it can’t be “Hershko son of Hertz” because, as much as I know, these are identical names. Could a grandchild carry his father’s patronym? Or, again, are they different names in Russian? -- Yohanan LOEFFLER Melbourne, Australia Researching (main surnames): From Austria, Slovakia: LOFFLER / LEFLER, LEDERER, SCHNEIDER, NATHAN, SEELENFRIED, ZAPPERT. From Bukowina, Galicia: MINSTER / MUNSTER, NAGEL, SCHERL, IWANIR. From Poland / Belarus: ALTMAN, KAMINSKY, KAMINKIER, LUBETKIN, SZTARK, YOSELEWICZ, KOSLOWSKI, KRAMARZ, RAUCHFELD.

Bessarabia/Moldova, Ocnitsa Jewish Cemetery #bessarabia
Hello everybody, There are about 80 cemeteries where Jews were buried in Bessarabia/Moldova. https://www.jewishgen.org/bessarabia/files/cemetery/Inventory202311-November.htm We have photographed and indexed remaining tombstones at the most of the cemeteries. Recently, our people from Ukraine went to Ocnitsa (Ocniţa), Moldova to photograph the stones. Unfortunately, the cemetery does not exist anymore. According to my information from 1990s the cemetery was located on a 1.9ha, and there were about 200 graves there. Not any more. This is going to be not the first cemetery destroyed, but already #12. You can see information about other destroyed cemeteries in Bessarabia/Moldova at https://www.jewishgen.org/bessarabia/files/cemetery/_destroyedCemeteries/DemolishedJewishCemeteries.pdf Our group decided to find information about such cemeteries and possible names of Jews buried there, and sent to JOWBR. We already have several such cemeteries worked on. I am now working on Jewish cemetery in Kaushany, and already know about 50 Jews buried there. Now I am trying to find Jews who were buried in Ocnitsa. Actually, the town is not far from Sokiryany (now in Ukraine). I hope there are some people might know where there relatives who were buried in Ocnitsa. Please send me these names. All the best, Yefim Kogan Bessarabia Cemetery Project Leader

Searching for a Rodkin family who lived in Rhodesia in 1976 (now Zimbabwe) #southafrica
I’m trying to find out more information about a Victoria/Vicky RODKIN who lived at in the suburb of Strathaven Park near Avondale in Rhodesia (now called Zimbabwe) during August 1976. I believe that she was in high school around that time. Avondale is a suburb of the town formerly known as Salisbury, now called Harare. I believe Vicky's mother’s name may have been Irene, and she may have later married a Peter Reynolds. Does anyone know or have any information about this family? Does anyone know how to contact Vicky or Irene today? Thanks for any input! Roy Ogus Palo Alto, California roy.ogus at outlook.com

Looking for a place named 'Bogojva' 3 #general
Dear community, I'm hoping to find the place where my grandfather and his family lived. They always said they were from Poland, but I'm aware that the territory might have changed and not be Poland nowadays. They left in 1926 and the ship record says they came from "Bogojva'. I haven't found places with a similar name, but perhaps I'm missing some aspect of the pronunciation that might help me spot the place. Do you have any ideas? Thank you very much! Laila

Looking to hire Russian Imperial military expert to find information from ca. 1898-1901 2 #russia
Dear All, It has been a while since I've posted to this group. I am looking for help (even if I have to hire someone) to find and go through any available Imperial Russia military records or journal to find some information from ca. 1898-1901. I can imagine finding someone to access this sort of information inside Russia, particularly at this point in history, may be a challenge or a risk, but I want to ask. My great-grandfather (the only one I knew, albeit barely up to the age of 3), from Lomza gubernia (now Poland), was in the Imperial Cavalry supposedly as an NCO-like leader of a Jewish regiment that was sent out to the east (Manchuria) around the time or just before the Boxer Rebellion. The family story goes that he and his group did not want to follow orders to cut the heads off everyone in a village, so they deserted, robbed a Russo-Chinese bank, and then while his crew went back home, since he was the leader he went farther east, through Japan and eventually to US via Canada. I am sure that much of this is completely true - and i know for a fact this last part is true as we have his train manifest from Montreal and his border crossing). My parents recall there was a 'wanted' poster for him in their last apartment, but it long since vanished. We would still really like to try to learn more and since he was a fugitive I'd have to think there would be some records from that period of time, if not for his 'service.' The only thing we have is a mid-1880s register of him and his brothers with the military (he was only 12 at the time). No photos, no idea of the name of the regiment, or of his official title although again he was supposed to have been their leader (he spoke many languages). A few years ago i corresponded with someone via this group who told me where i might find military journals of that era - they are all in Russian, of course, and difficult for me to penetrate (I have not checked to see if they are still online). There also used to be a Russian military website (www.regiment.ru) but it is defunct at least that address. I had pored through that and there were some candidate regiments (cavalry from that area that went to the far east) but no details or names other than the main man (they might have not listed many Jewish NCO's either). Any leads or specific suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Wayne Frankel relevant surname for this post: SOKOL relevant town for this post: JABLONKA (later, ZAMBROW), Lomza gubernia

The Jewish Genealogy Society of Long Island invites you to our upcoming meeting Wednesday, May 1, 2024 7:00 PM Location: Zoom Topic: Ships of Our Ancestors Speaker: Hal Bookbinder Ships of Our Ancestors. During the active years of Ellis Island, 83,000 ship arrivals were recorded. Between 1880 and 1914 about two million Jewish immigrants arrived from Europe, with most passing through Ellis Island. Until the age of flight, immigrants arrived by sea, first on sailing ships and after the middle of the 19th Century, on steamships. This presentation focuses on the ships on which our ancestors traveled, discussing the shift from sail to steam and the governmental regulations which made ship travel safer and more humane. It will address the experience of our ancestors in getting to the port of embarkation, being processed for passage, and their shipboard experience, as well as the cost and duration of the voyage. Haskel Karo 3 #poland
First of all, I want to thank everybody who helped me out in getting the birth record of Dawid Karo. I found out that his father was named Haskiel Karo. There are many records for Haskiel in the town of Pyzdry, but he has three marriage records. One to Marya, one to Maryanna, and one to Roze. Also, sometimes Marya is referred to as Maryanna. Are these different Haskiel Karos who lived at the same time in the same town, or did he marry three times? If it is the same person, I believe that Dawid was born to Haskiel and Marya.
