ScopeThe large collection, the Stephen S. Wise Papers 1884-1968, #P-134, has a names index. Rabbi Stephen S. Wise was perhaps the most influential American Jew of the first half of the 20th century. He was a supporter of progressive Judaism, and an energetic promoter of political liberalism. There was not an area of significance to the American Jewish community in which he did not involve himself, as his papers bear out. His voluminous correspondence with religious, political, and social leaders of his time provide a fascinating view of recent history. Since his contacts were so wide-reaching, the index itself is quite a valuable genealogical resource. The Wise papers should be consulted on microfilm at the Brandeis library periodicals room. The finding aid to the collection is needed to cross-reference the index numbers with the microfilm volumes. The finding aid can be found on the short book cases in the periodicals room in the Goldfarb Library; these cases are directly in front upon entering the room, before reaching the microfilm readers.

All AJHS manuscript collections must be accessed in person on-site at the American Jewish Historical Society. For information on how to research the AJHS archival collections, essential information about their Reading Room and Regulations can be found at http://www.ajhs.org/reference/readingrooms.cfm.

The AJHS collections themselves are not available in any electronic form, on this website or elsewhere. The AJHS has been collecting this material for over 100 years, and preserves it in its archives in the original format, be it handwritten, typewritten, or printed. For more information on the AJHS' genealogical holdings see the article "Genealogical Resources at the American Jewish Historical Society".
