Kohler, Max James Papers

Kohler's extensive activities on behalf of liberal immigration
and naturalization laws in the United States, his opposition to
the registration of aliens, the problem of Chinese immigration to
the United States, his opposition to the use of the term "Hebrew
Race" in the classification of immigrants, the drafting of
minority clauses at the Paris Peace Conference in 1919, Jewish
and Christian relations in the U.S. and the condition of Jews in
Russia, Roumania, Poland and Nazi-Germany with the following
institutions: the American Civil Liberties Union, 1926-1934,
B'Nai Brith, 1930-1933, Board of Delegates on Civil Rights, the
Committee on Ellis Island, the Foreign Language Information
Service, the Hebrew Benevolent Society of Baltimore, the Hebrew
Sheltering and Immigrant Aid Society, the Jewish Immigrant's
Information Bureau in Galveston, Texas, the Industrial Removal
Office, the National Conference on Jews and Christians, the
National Council on Naturalization and Citizenship, the Bureau of
Immigration of the United States Department of Labor, the United
States Department of Commerce and Labor, the Department of State
and individual United States Congressmen. Contains also
correspondence pertaining to the book G-d In Freedom by Luiggi
Luzzatti which Kohler edited and for which he wrote a large
supplementary chapter. In addition there is a large amount of
personal correspondence arranged alphabetically pertaining
primarily to Kohler's published works. Also contains an extensive
collection of the correspondence of Baron and Baroness de Hirsch
pertaining to their various philanthropic activities among which
were the Jewish Colonization Association, the Baron de Hirsch
Agricultural School on Woodbine, NJ, the Baron de Hirsch Fund,
and other efforts to assist the Jews of Russia, as well as
printed and published material and biographical data collected by
Kohler. Includes also one scrapbook pertaining to Haym Salomon;
Leon Huhner's material on American Jewish history with particular
references to the Jews in the South and biographical data on col.
David Salisbuty Franks; material on the financial activities of
the Seligman family during the Civil War and the 1870's, Rober J.
Walker, special agent of the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury to
England during Civil War, and on August Belmont. The collection
also contains Kohler's manuscript notes, and published material
pertaining to the Dreyfus Affair, Jewish history in general and
American history in particular. Also included is material by
Winifred Kohler, Kohler's wife. The collection also contains a
biography of Kaufman Kohler, as well as correspondence concerning
the publication of the David Einhorn Memorial volume, and printed
materials authored by him. Also contains the original typescript
of a speech delivered before the National Geographic Society on
January 19, 1917, entitled, "The Progressive World Struggle of
the Jews for Civil Equality." Also included is correspondence
between Taft and the American Jewish Historical Society.
