correspondence, printed materials, newspaper clippings and
photographs relating to Broido's employment, investments, and
Jewish and non-Jewish communal activities. Includes material on
Gimbel Bros. (1934-66), where he was associated with Bernard
Gimbel and which he served as Executive Vice President (1936-53)
and as Chairman of the Advisory Committee (1953-61); Temple
Emanu-El (1957-70), which he served as trustee and where he
opposed secession from the Union of American Hebrew
Congregations; the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee
(1944-76) which he served as President (1965-75) and where he was
involved in the investigation of the Charles Jordan murder
(1967); the Union of American Hebrew Congregations (1953-72)
which he served as trustee and where he played an active role in
financial matters and relations with the Hebrew Union College;
the United Jewish Appeal (1941-72) which he served as President
(1951-2), trustee and member of the Board of Directors; the New
York City Community College (1956-72) which he served as trustee;
and the Department of Commerce and Industrial Development of the
City of New York (1961-71) which he served as Commissioner
(1961-66). Also includes correspondence and papers relating to
the National Council of Jewish Women (1941-73), efforts on behalf
of European refugees (1938-50); the hebrew University (1941-72);
the Jewish Statistical Bureau (1947-70); the Joint Defense Appeal
(1943-57); the New York City Charter Revision Commission (1961);
the Citizens Committee to Save the New York Naval Shipyard in
Brooklyn (1964-69); the Co-operative Education Commission
(1955-1961); the Harmonie Club (1943-56); the Liberal party
(1961-72); the New School for Social Research (1941-66); and the
New York City Industrial Development Corporation (1965-71) among
others. Also includes Broido's writings and speeches, personal
correspondence, telephone and mail diaries, as well as
biographical vitae, newspaper clippings, photographs and
brochures describing his activities. Among the correspondents
are: Jacob Billiumpf, richard J. Blum, Samuel Goldenson, Maurice
Eisendrath, Elie Eliachar, Carl Voss and Anne X. Alpern.
