Type / Call # | Personal / P-255 | The collection consists primarily of the research notes of Samuel Oppenheim on Colonial American and Brazilian Jewry. The notes were gleaned, for the most part, from primary sources, i.e. court records, newspaper advertisements, synagogue records, and records of the Dutch West India Company. The greater part of the collection dealing with Colonial American Jewry is arranged by individual Jew; there are listings for over 1100 individuals. The collection also includes typewritten copies of Aaron Lopez' correspondence (originals are located in the Newport Historical Society), and Oppenheim's unpublished manuscripts and research correspondence. A detailed outline and guide has been prepared for the collection, including a listing of the individuals for whom information was located. Also included in box 43 is a complaint brought by Abraham De Lucena against Saul Dovalle in the Mayor's Court, New York City, for non-payment of a debt. Also included a complaint brought by Abraham Bowen against Henry Isaacs in the Mayor's Court, New York, New York, for non-payment of a debt. Also included is a complaint brought by Isaac Gabay against Hendrick ten Eyck of New York City for non-fulfillment of a covenant.Also contains a brief detailing of a complaint against van der Wilden for non-payment of a debt. Also contains a brief filled against Campanall by Richard Williams, for Non-payment of a debt. Contains a brief filed by Bueno against Andrew Groves for non-payment of a debt. Also included is a power of attorney and the last will and testament of Brown. Contains the inventory of Samuel Levy, Hunterton, NY, consisting primarily of his sales stock. Among those listed debtors to the estate are Torres Benjamin, Levy Moses, Levy Hart, and Jonas Solomons. The inventory is signed by Naphtali Hart Myers, administrator of the estate. Contains the warrant and return issued by Johnston, Mayor of New York City, authorizing an election for constable to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Samuel Levy. | Years | 1650-1850
