Linfield, Harry Sebee

Linfield served as a "special agent"for Jewish data for the United States Bureau of the Census and Decennial Censuses of Religious Bodies in 1926, 1936, and 1946. The majority of the collection contains the original materials related to gathering census information about Jews and original materials which were to be used in compiling a Jewish Directory that Linfield planned to publish but never did. These materials are filed together alphabetically by state, with a section on New York City at the end. Also includes census information on homes for the aged, hospitals, state hospital admissions, federations, orphan homes and national organizations.
The collection contains correspondence and information concerning the controversy over including a question on religion in the United States Census.
Contains original materials related to a study Linfield prepared in the 1930's on Jews and crime, including statistics on Jewish prisoners in the U.S. and services received.
Also contains information on Black Jews, 1936-64; farmers, 1958-63; congregations of Landsmanshaften, 1937; cemeteries and charitable foundations. Includes information on the Jewish Statistical Bureau and its publications: Digest of Events of Jewish Interest, Hasid's Index to Periodicals and Booklist, and necrologies of rabbis, 1953-1971.
The collection also contains personal papers relating to Linfield's life and career.
