Type / Call # | Personal Papers / P-412 | Contains papers and documents dealing with Levy's involvement in the disposition of Monticello, owned by his brother, Uriah P. Levy, Jonas. P. Levy's claims against the U.S. Government for losses suffered during the war with Mexico, 1843-1846, and two items relating to the Civil War. The papers concerning Monticello deal primarily with Levy's efforts to close his brother's estate by selling Monticello at auction. The majority of letters are from William J. Robertson, Levy's lawyer in Richmond, and George Carr, the court-appointed commissioner of the estate, along with Levy's handwritten copies of some of his letters to them. Also included is miscellaneous correspondence dealing with Monticello, and a letter dealing with another portion of Uriah P. Levy's estate. The papers concerning Levy's claims against the U.S. government consist primarily of correspondence with various U.S. and Mexican officials, printed petitions to Congress regarding the claim, and various undated supporting documents for his claim. The Civil War items deal with payment for goods bought from Jonas P. Levy by the War Department in Wilmington, N.C. | Years | 1851-1882
