Poland (Country), Poland

Poland's boundaries have changed considerably over the years. Between 1815 and 1916, Poland existed only as a region within the Russian Empire known as Congress Poland (or Kingdom of Poland), corresponding to the central and eastern portions of modern Poland. Poland became independent in 1918, and by 1921 had had expanded to include Posen (from Germany), Galicia (from Austria-Hungary), and western portions of Wolhynia and Belarus (from Russian). In 1945, much of the eastern area was returned to the USSR: Wolhynia and East Galicia went to Ukraine and Belarus was restored to its current boundaries. In exchange, Poland received Silesia and additional areas from Germany.
